Spellbinders | Americana Quilt Card

Hello! Making this Americana quilt card was an absorbing process, almost like assembling a small paper quilt. I used an older 3″ quilt square die (Flower Mini Quilt by Becca Feeken) from Spellbinders and inlaid red, white, and blue patterned papers to create a classic Americana patchwork. I repeated the process to make a second square. The finished card is 3 1/4″ x 6 1/4″ and is kept simple with a BetterPress sentiment. The result feels nostalgic. This card idea occurred to me after I posted about Red, White, and Blue cards.

This card came together easily and became a relaxing project while I was brushing up on my watercolor skills for a different card. I’ve been enjoying revisiting older products, such as the Flower Mini Quilt die set, and discovering new ways to use them. You can see a guest blog post from several years ago that uses this die set and others in the Home Sweet Quilt Collection HERE.

Red, White & Blue Card Inspiration

Hello! The Fourth of July inspires more than flags and fireworks! Over the years, I’ve created a variety of cards that celebrate the holiday in different ways. Whether you’re drawn to traditional Americana or prefer a more contemporary approach, these projects showcase a range of techniques and styles that can be adapted for Independence Day, summer celebrations, and beyond. I’ve gathered them here for inspiration and a look back at some favorite creations.

With its festive Fourth of July decorations and loyal canine companion, this watercolored porch scene celebrates the simple pleasures of home during the holiday.

A mix of botanical elements with classic Independence Day symbols gives this design a playful, unexpected twist while still honoring the traditional red, white, and blue theme.

A combination of birds, a birdhouse, and a patriotic color palette creates a cheerful Fourth of July card full of charm.

This clean and simple design keeps the focus on bold patriotic elements. Die-cut stars, “USA” letters, and a strong background come together in a crisp, graphic composition.

I never tire of working with the Fourth of July theme. Looking back through these projects has also reminded me of how many favorite supplies and designs I already have on hand. I’m looking forward to pulling out those familiar elements and using them in new ways.

Do you make Fourth of July cards each year, or is this a theme you dip into only now and then?

Fourth of July Bicycle Card Scene

Hello! This Fourth of July card was created more as a small scene piece than a traditional greeting card. I built it around the large Spellbinders bicycle die set (the Big Bicycle from Bibi’s Cats and Pugs Collection), combining it with balloon dies and additional elements from other Spellbinders sets.

I used patterned paper from Echo Park for the background and a coordinating Echo Park sentiment. The overall design was inspired by an image I saw in a shop window of a garden flag. To accommodate the scene and keep the proportions balanced, I worked in an 8” x 8” format, which allowed the elements to breathe and interact visually rather than being constrained by a standard card size.

The result is less about practicality and more about storytelling in paper form.

Spellbinders | Stars, Stripes & Celebration

Hello! I’m sharing a card made with bonus items from the Spellbinders Crate, an embossing folder and die set, and it felt like the perfect project to celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday. The background was created using a fireworks embossing folder, which instantly sets a festive tone. For the focal point, I filled an Uncle Sam hat with florals, an American flag, and a firework, creating a design that feels both patriotic and celebratory. I finished the card with a subtle BetterPress sentiment that complements the design without detracting from the focal image.

Newton’s Nook | Cat and Sparklers Card

I couldn’t resist making another card with the Newton’s 4th of July stamp set from Newton’s Nook! This time, the star of the show is a cheerful cat holding sparklers in both paws—ready to celebrate in style. I watercolored the image pairing it with patterned papers to reinforce the theme. See my first card with this stamp set HERE.

    • Cover an A2-size card base with patterned paper.
    • Stamp the 4th of July stamp image on to watercolor paper. Color with medium of choice. Once dry, cut with coordinating die set. I used Gansai Tambi watercolors.
    • Stamp the sentiment onto patterned paper and cut with an oval die. Cut another oval from a coordinating patterned paper and adhere sentiment piece. Add assembly to a scalloped oval mat cut from white cardstock. Add the assembly to the prepared base and adhere the watercolored image with foam adhesive.

As I mentioned in this post on card backgrounds, patterned paper offers a quick and convenient way to add character. I used papers from three different pads in my stash on this card.
